Arab League Slams Canadian, Israeli Ministers’ Meeting in East Jerusalem

CAIRO, April 14, 2013 (WAFA) – The Arab League, in a press statement Sunday, expressed Strong dissatisfaction over Canada’s foreign minister’s meeting with Israel’s justice minister in East Jerusalem and considered it a move to legitimize Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem.

The Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, met with the Israeli Justice Minister and chief negotiator, Tzipi Livni, in her office at the Justice Ministry in East Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Arab League spokesman Nassif Hitti considered this meeting a flagrant violation of the international law, relevant resolutions of the Security Council, UN General Assembly and Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilian persons in time of war.

He said that this meeting encourages Israel to continue with its occupying policy and its lack of respect to the international law and relevant international resolutions, as well as obstructs efforts exerted to achieve peace.

Hitti called on Canada to respect the international resolutions as well as the principles and provisions of international law regarding the Palestinian cause to insure security, stability and a comprehensive just peace in the region.
