RAMALLAH, November 4, 2014 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee member, Hanan Ashrawi, stressed the need to hold Israel accountable for its violations and to provide Palestine with the necessary protection.
During a high-level panel at the “Enhancing Women’s Share in Peace and Security” Conference which took place in the Austrian Parliament, discussed Israel’s most recent assault on the Gaza Strip and its detrimental impact on women and their right to life, shelter, health, education, and security.
Ashrawi stressed the need to implement the national plan to end violence against women, to lobby and advocate to get women in decision-making positions, and to enhance public awareness of women’s rights.
The conference aimed at increasing awareness on women, peace and security issues in the Austrian public, to discuss the integration of a gender perspective in conflict prevention, management and analysis, and to contribute to the Global Study on Implementation of UNSCR 1325 commissioned by UNWOMEN as required by UNSCR 2122 (2013).
In addition, Ashrawi provided an assessment concerning the current facts on the ground, the loss of Palestinian freedom and human rights as a result of the military occupation, and Israel’s culture of violence, impunity, power politics, and militarization and their effect on Palestine as a whole and women in particular.
The panel was attended by a wide audience, which included representatives from the Austrian President’s Office, the Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, and various members of the international diplomatic community, academic community and civil society.
