CAIRO, August 11, 2014 (WAFA) – Member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Saeb Erekat, Monday called upon the Arab League to support his initiative launched during the Arab League Council’s emergency meeting, and urge the United States, the European countries, Russia, China, and the rest of the world countries to establish sea, ground and aerial corridors for humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
During a speech at the permanent representatives of the Arab League’s meeting, Erekat highlighted the importance of Egypt’s efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as an Egypt-sponsored 72-hour truce went on effect at midnight Monday.
Erekat said Israel is still pursuing the policy of ‘provocation, blackmail and escalation’ so as not to reach a permanent ceasefire, noting that the Palestinian demands presented in Cairo are the fruit of a united Palestinian stance, and saying these demands are not conditions but ‘understandings’ agreed upon with the Israelis, who failed to commit to these understandings.
The official warned against the continuing Israeli war aiming foremost to ‘strike’ the Palestinian national unity and the consensus government, as well as targeting 11 million Palestinians rather than only a Palestinian faction.
He said the Israeli aggression is destined to fail, and that Israel’s “self-defense” pretext is no longer acceptable, nor justifiable.
Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil al-Arabi, said what is required at the moment is not only stopping the aggression, but also ending the Israeli occupation, drawing in the meantime the importance of the Egyptian current efforts to reach a fixed ceasefire.
Al-Arab echoed calls upon the UN Security Council to uphold their responsibilities in forcing Israel to halt the aggression and to protect the Palestinians.
