European Parliament Votes in Favor of Resolution on Palestinian Prisoners

STRASBOURG, March 14, 2013 (WAFA) – The European Parliament voted Thursday in favor of a resolution submitted by Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group on the case of the Palestinian prisoner who recently died in Israeli jail, Arafat Jaradat, and the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Palestinian representative to the EU, Leila Shahid, thanked the European parliamentarians for their support to the prisoners.

The resolution called on the Israeli authorities to “promptly open independent, impartial and transparent investigations into the circumstances of the death of Jaradat as well as into all cases of allegation of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of Palestinian prisoners.”

It said it was “concerned by the Palestinian detainees held in administrative detention without charges, stresses that these detainees should be charged and face trial with judicial guarantees in accordance with international standards, or be promptly released.”

The resolution expressed “deep concern about the situation and health condition of Palestinian detainees on extended hunger strike.”

It called “once again for the immediate release of all imprisoned members of the Palestinian Legislative Council including Marwan Barghouti.”

The resolution also called for “a fact-finding mission by the European Parliament to assess the current situation with regards detention conditions of Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, and the use of administrative detention.”
