RAMALLAH, June 9, 2014 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on Monday commended the efforts undertaken by UNRWA in support of the Palestinian refugees, particularly in the Gaza Strip, especially in health and education sectors. He called on the international community to compel Israel to lift its siege on the Gaza Strip.
The remarks came as Hamdallah met with the UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl and his accompanying delegation on Monday, at the Office of the Prime Minister in Ramallah, where the parties discussed the importance of supporting and setting up projects in the West Bank’s refugee camps and the Diaspora, especially in Syria.
Hamdallah urged UNRWA to make greater efforts and to allocate aid to the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian refugee camps in Syria and refugees displaced from Syria to Lebanon.
On the other side, Krahenbuhl stressed the need to re-open the Rafah border crossing, on Egypt-Gaza borders, to allow individuals and merchandise in and out of the Gaza Strip. He also underscored the need to communicate with the Palestinian government in order to improve the situation in the refugee camps in Syria, especially in the Yarmouk.
Krahenbuhl and the accompanying delegation stressed that UNRWA staff had returned to work as normal, adding that discussions regarding the raise in pay is still open.
