Hard-line Israeli Minister Urges ‘Capital Punishment’ for Palestinian Prisoners

TEL AVIV, February 18, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has proposed a bill calling on Israel to legalize capital punishment of Palestinian prisoners who are convicted of murder.

Lieberman, who chairs Israel’s far-right Yisrael Beytenu party, said the first law that he would propose in the next Knesset will be the death penalty for “terrorists”.

“We have to signal that we’re changing direction. No more deals [to release Palestinian prisoners]. Rather, the opposite: The first law that we will propose in the next Knesset will be the death penalty for terrorists. We must not give them hope,” he was quoted by Israeli media.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Institute for National Security Studies, Liberman said at least “one more round of violence with Hamas in Gaza was inevitable,” saying Israel should strive for a “decisive victory” in every military campaign. Otherwise, he added, “we will simply lose out big time.”

Lieberman is an illegal settler of the West Bank who constantly supports settlement construction and expansion despite of its illegality in international law. He is well known for his anti-Arab sentiments and believes that Arab residents of Israel should be transferred to the occupied Palestinian Territories.
