Dr. Ashrawi on Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman’s Threats Against the Palestinian UN Bid

PLO Executive Committee member and head of the PLO Department of Culture and Information, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, today strongly denounced Israeli Foreign Minister Avidgor Lieberman’s threats to implement retaliatory measures against the Palestinian leadership if it pursues observer-state status in the United Nations:

“Rather than acting responsibly and in compliance with signed agreements, terms of reference and international law, Israel is waging a dangerous campaign against the Palestinian leadership and its people.  Such arrogant threats are false and provocative, and they constitute a serious attempt by the Israeli government to meddle in internal Palestinian affairs.”

“The Palestinian people will not surrender to such extortion tactics that obstruct the prospects for peace and the establishment of a Palestinian state.  The Palestinian leadership will continue to actively pursue observer-state status in the United Nations.  We have the full right to seek justice in all international legal venues to guarantee our basic rights and freedoms that Israel is insistently violating on a daily basis.”

Dr. Ashrawi also condemned Israeli intentions to move forward with plans to construct 1,285 settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem and in Ariel:

“Such organized efforts to construct more units in the illegal settlements of Pisgat Zeev, Ramot, and Ariel are a deliberate attempt to breach international law and to destroy all chances for peace.”

Dr. Ashrawi stressed, “With today’s announcement, it is obvious that such actions are in response to our decision to go to the United Nations, which serves to rescue the failed peace process and end the illegal occupation.  As such, this sends a clear message to both the international community and to the Palestinians that Israel is more committed to annexing Palestinian land than committing to any peace resolution with the Palestinian people.”

“We call on the European Union, the Quartet and other members of the international community to hold Israel accountable, demand that it cease all settlement activities and actions that defy international law and support our peaceful diplomatic efforts to achieve an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital,” concluded Dr. Ashrawi.
