RAMALLAH, July 1, 2015 (WAFA) – The so-called Israeli central command officer has ordered the confiscation of 70 square meters of private Palestinian lands near the illegal outpost of ‘Migron’ near Ramallah, Peace Now reported on Wednesday.
The organization said the Supreme Court of Israel earlier ordered a full evacuation of the outpost since it was built on a private Palestinian land, but the Israeli central command officer cited security reasons behind his decision to confiscate the land.
Israeli settlements are in direct violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which establishes that the occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.
The Security Council, the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and the International Court of Justice have all confirmed that the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements and other settlement-related activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are illegal under international law.
The settler population in the West Bank is estimated at 531,000: in late 2012 the population of the West Bank settlements was 341,400; in late 2011 there were 190,423 individuals living in Israeli neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.
B’Tselem the Israeli human rights group said, “The settlements have been allocated vast areas, far exceeding their built-up sections. These areas have been declared closed military zones by military orders and are off limits to Palestinians, except by special permit. In contrast, Israeli citizens, Jews from anywhere in the world and tourists may all freely enter these areas.”
