Israeli Army Quells Khan Younes Demonstration for Land Day

KHAN YOUNES, March 29, 2015 (WAFA) – The Israeli army Sunday quelled a peaceful demonstration east of Khan Younes, south of the Gaza Strip which took place to mark the occasion of Land Day, according to WAFA correspondent.

He said dozens of Palestinians rallied on the occasion of the Land Day and marched towards the Israeli border fence east of Khan Younes, before Israeli soldiers attacked them with teargas canisters and stun grenades. There were reports of several suffocation cases.

Hours earlier, Israeli naval boats opened gunfire at Palestinian fishermen sailing offshore Gaza while they were sailing four miles off the coast. No casualties were reported.

Israeli navy and army routinely open fire on Palestinian fishermen sailing within the six-nautical-mile limit, despite of the ceasefire deal signed on August 26, 2014 which was supposed to put end to all forms of hostilities in Gaza and Israel.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel would immediately ease the blockade imposed on the strip and expand the fishing zone off Gaza’s coast, allowing fishermen to sail as far as six nautical miles from shore, and would continue to expand the area gradually.
