Israeli Settlers Raze Farmlands near Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, January 15, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli settlers razed Thursday morning farmlands to the south of Bethlehem, said a local activist.

According to the Coordinator of the Popular Committee against the Wall and Settlement Hasan Breijiyya, settlers from the illegal Israeli settlement of Efrat, accompanied by three bulldozers, raided al-Nahla area adjacent to the settlement, where they leveled 30 dunums of farmlands.

The owner was identified as Muhammad ‘Ayyash.

Breijiyya noted that the area was razed a prelude to establish a local illegal settlement outpost.

The settlements are in violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which establishes that the occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.

The Security Council, the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and the International Court of Justice have all confirmed that the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements and other settlement-related activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory are illegal under international law.
