ROMA, July 31, 2014 (WAFA) – Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, expressed her full support to the Egyptian initiative towards a cease-fire in Gaza.
“The position of Italy is consistent with the position of the United Nations and the league of Arab states for the need to respect the humanitarian international law and provide protection to civilians,” she stressed.
This came during an interrogation by the Italian Parliament’s Commission called for by the Palestinian-Italian Friendship Committee to clarify the position of Italy regarding the Israeli aggression on Gaza.
Mogherini stressed the intensification of efforts exerted in coordination with all parties towards a cease-fire, the provision of humanitarian aid to Palestine, and the re-construction of Gaza.
“The call I’m making during this session and to the entire Italian public opinion is that we should not be divided into ‘friends of Israel’ or ‘friends of Palestine’ nor should we be asked to choose to take sides in this conflict, but rather we must do what’s necessary and provide support in accordance with international humanitarian law,” she concluded.
