Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Demolition of EU-funded Shelters in East Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, March 11, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli forces leveled vast tracts of land and demolished European Union-funded shelters in the East Jerusalem town of al-‘Issawiya both news articles that hit the front page main headlines in the three Arabic Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds reported that vast areas of land were razed by Israeli forces in al-‘Issawiya and the airport road in East Jerusalem. Al-Ayyam reported that the leveled land has been earmarked by Israeli occupation authorities for a settlement park.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that EU-funded shelters were demolished by Israeli occupation forces in al-‘Issawiya.

The three dailies reported, as part of their main front page news article, that nine Palestinians were shot and injured during clashes with Israeli occupation forces in Kufr ‘Aqab (the vicinity of Qalandya airport) and the Israeli prison of ‘Ofer near Beitunia. Al-Quds added that 23 Palestinians were detained.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that residential structures and livestock barns were demolished by Israeli forces in the Jericho town of al-Jiftlik.

Al-Quds printed a photo featuring Israeli bulldozers, protected by soldiers, leveling and excavating lands in al-‘Issawiya. Al-Ayyam newspaper printed a photo featuring a Palestinian young man salvaging his belongings after his family’s house was demolished in al-Jiftlik. Meanwhile, al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a photo showing a Palestinian Birzeit University student being detained by Israeli soldiers near Ofer.

The three dailies reported that hundreds of Palestinian activists were blacklisted by the Israeli occupation municipality (West Jerusalem municipality), and would be accordingly the target of taxes and house demolitions.

They reported that President Mahmoud Abbas concluded a three-day official visit to Switzerland.

Al-Quds reported that some Palestinians have purchased an estate from Jews in East Jerusalem.

The three dailies quoted Saudi King Salman bin Abdul-‘Aziz Al-Saud as stating: “We are committed to supporting the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights.”

They quoted King Abdullah II of Jordan as stating that the failure of the Middle East peace process would provide extremists with the pretext to rally support.

Al-Ayyam reported that ‘Islamic State’ group released a video purportedly announcing that it has executed a Palestinian who holds an Israeli citizenship and who the group claimed was recruited by Israeli intelligence (Mossad).

It also reported that UNRWA has called for the entry of aid into the besieged Syria-based al-Yarmouk refugee camp to be facilitated.

Following his call for having the heads of Palestinians, who hold Israeli citizenship and show disloyalty to Israel, chopped off with an axe, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the Legal Center for the Arab Minority Rights in Israel (Adalah) has called for opening a criminal investigation against Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
