Newspaper Review: Israel to Release Withheld Palestinian Tax Revenues

RAMALLAH, April 19, 2015 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on the Israeli government’s recent announcement about a potential release of clearance revenues, collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, now withheld for fourth months.

The dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas, who chaired a PLO meeting on Saturday, announced that Israel will soon release the Palestinian Authority’s tax revenues – withheld since January – without any deductions.

On a different note, the dailies said the PLO executive committee declared its support of a political, rather than military, solution to the ongoing crisis in al-Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Zionist Union Chairman Isaac Herzog said his party is heading for the opposition, and will not become part of a unity government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The two papers reported on an old Palestinian woman from Gaza who died on Saturday after parts of her home, partially damaged by the 2014 Israeli aggression on Gaza, collapsed with her inside.

The two dailies said Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Israel not to pass an arms supply deal with Ukraine.

Al-Ayyam said the Egyptian Armed Forces announced it had recently demolished some 69 ground tunnels on the border with Gaza.

Meanwhile, al-Ayyam reported that two explosions exploded in front of the offices of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA in Gaza City on Saturday night. There were no casualties in the blasts, according to Gaza security officials.

The paper also published allegations by the Israeli police that the recent incident in Jerusalem in which an Israeli was run over by a Palestinian is surly “an act of terrorism”.
