Newspaper Review: Israeli Crackdown on Hebron Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, November 8, 2015 (WAFA) – Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on Israel’s reprisal measures against Hebron in the past two days, in the aftermath of the shooting and injury of three Israeli soldiers.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli army forces conducted rigorous home searches in Hebron’s Old City, just after two shooting incidents which took place on Friday and left three Israeli soldiers injured.

The dailies also highlighted settlers’ attacks on Palestinian homes in Hebron, especially in the Old City, which took place concurrently with the Israeli military crackdown on the city.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli authorities claimed they had detained the ‘sniper’; a 16-year-old boy, who shot two Israeli soldiers in Hebron’s Old City on Friday.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said an Israel Channel II poll revealed that 75% of Israelis support the ‘on site extrajudicial murder’ of Palestinians who carry out attacks on Israeli targets.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army claimed that a Palestinian attempted to run over Israeli soldiers in Hebron before fleeing the scene.

On a different subject, al-Ayyam said a Palestinian from Bethlehem died due to the effects of inhaling teargas recently used by Israeli forces to quell protests in the city.

It also reported that a Palestinian was killed by Israeli soldiers” fire to the east of al-Birij Refugee Camp in Gaza.

The three dailies said an Israeli soldier was injured by a ‘friendly fire’ in Hebron on Saturday.

Regarding the ongoing clashes across the West Bank, including Gaza, al-Quds said that a number of Palestinians were shot and several others suffocated after inhaling tear gas used against them by the Israeli army..

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that President Mahmoud Abbas met with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shukri, and Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi, on Saturday.
