Newspaper Review: Mass Israeli Military Exercises Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, March 2, 2015 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on Monday a mass Israeli military training in the West Bank, which took place on Sunday in what was said in anticipation of a possible third Palestinian uprising.

The dailies said the Israeli army called up about 13,000 army reservists in anticipation of escalation with the Palestinians, following heightened tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, who said that the PA was studying a reshape of its economic ties with Israel, by establishing an independent economy.

Al-Ayyam said Israel declared that 300 army soldiers were disabled by the 2014 aggression on Gaza.

In a different subject, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that two Palestinians were injured with live bullets and dozens others suffocated by teargas inhalation, during confrontations with the Israeli army in Bethlehem and Hebron.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the United States Secretary of State John Kerry, who said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s imminent speech in the US should not be a ‘political football.’

Al-Ayyam said Netanyahu was starting a “provocative visit” to the US. It quoted analysts’ reports, who said the deterioration in Netanyahu-Obama relations is likely to affect the broader coalition between Israel and the US.

The daily said a recent poll revealed a significant drop in US’ popular support to Israel.

Al-Quds said the Israeli authorities notified a Palestinian family in Jerusalem to evict its house, on a dispute over the house’s ownership. The family said it rented the house from the Jordanian authorities before 1967.
