RAMALLAH, March 5, 2015 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas remarks during the Palestine Liberation Organization Central Council’s meeting hit the front page headlines in the three Arabic Palestinian dailies.
The three dailies reported that Abbas has called on the council to reconsider the Palestinian Authority’s function(s).
Al-Quds also reported on Abbas as also calling on the council to ensure that adherence to treaties shall not be unilateral and quoted him as saying: “Solving the Palestinian cause would contribute to the elimination of violence and extremism throughout the region.”
He was also quoted by al-Quds as stating: “Peaceful popular resistance is the best means to confront the [Israeli] occupation.”
Abbas was also quoted by al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating: “As soon as Hamas sends me a written official approval, I will immediately issue a decree calling for elections.” While in the same time, al-Quds reported on senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouq calling on Abbas to issue a decree setting a date for elections.
Highlighting Hamas-Egypt relations, al-Quds quoted senior Hamas official Isma‘il Haniyeh as saying: “Our relation with Egypt is strategic and we do not interfere in its affairs.”
Al-Ayyam quoted Egyptian official sources as announcing that any Hamas member found in Egypt would be arrested and all their assets would be confiscated.
The Arab League was quoted in al-Quds as saying in this regard: “We are not proud about the Egyptian court’s verdict to backlist Hamas as a ‘terrorist organization’.”
Highlighting Israeli forces’ practices throughout the occupied Palestinian Territory, al-Quds reported that Israeli force wrecked three tent homes and three tin shacks in the northern Jordan Valley locality of Khirbet ‘Ein Karzaliyah.
It added that settlers attempted to break into the Nabi Younes mosque (the Mosque of Prophet Younes) in Halhul, near Hebron.
Highlighting Premier Rami Hamdallah’s meeting with Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry, al-Quds reported that Hamdallah re-invited Palestinian factions to support and enable the national consensus government to assume its functions in Gaza.
In the wake of leaking a video showing Israeli soldiers pushing dogs to attack a Palestinian child in the Hebron town of Beit Ummar, al-Quds reported that soldiers’ use of dogs is widely condemned.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Archbishop Desmond Tutu as saying: “The West committed the Holocaust against the Jews of Europe, while the Palestinians are still paying a price for it.”
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Israel, namely the so-called Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities in the Palestinian Territories (COGAT), who has announced that it would double the volume of water provided to Gaza.
The papers also reported that the UK has banned an Israeli government tourism advert for suggesting that the occupied Old City of Jerusalem as part of Israel.
