Newspaper Review: Weekly Friday Demonstrations, Italian parliament’s Recognition of Palestinian State Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 28, 2015 (WAFA) – The weekly Friday demonstrations against Israeli occupation and settlement construction across the West Bank together with the Italian parliament’s recognition of the Palestinian state hit the front page headlines of Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that dozens of Palestinians were shot, injured, and detained as Israeli occupation forces quelled the weekly peaceful demonstrations.

Al-Quds reported that Palestinians were injured by live bullets during a demonstration that commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Palestinian popular resistance in the Ramallah village of Bil‘in.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this respect that Palestinians demonstrated in Hebron demanding the Israeli occupation authorities to reopen the Shuhada street while Israeli occupation forces proceeded to quell the demonstration in response.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a photo featuring Palestinian demonstrators being pushed by Israeli forces in Hebron while al-Ayyam printed a photo featuring a Palestinian girl confronting Israeli forces with a stone in her hand.

While al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted the weekly Friday demonstrations in their main front page news item, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to give prominence to the Italian parliament’s recognition of the Palestinian state.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that the parliament overwhelmingly support the recognition of the State of Palestine , a move that the Palestinian Presidency has commended and considered as a support for the peace process.

Al-Ayyam reported in this respect that the parliament’s motion urges the Italian government to recognize the sovereign Palestinian state on 1967 borders.

Al-Quds quoted Justice Minister Salim al-Saqqa as stating: “We are serious about the unification of institutions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.”

With regard to torching the Greek Orthodox Church monastery of Sion in Jerusalem and a mosque in the Bethlehem village of al-Jab‘a by Jewish settlers, the three dailies reported several foreign and Arab states, namely France, Egypt, Bahrain and the EU missions, condemned the attacks.

Al-Quds added that the US General Consul in Jerusalem Michael Ratney visited the targeted mosque and church.

Making remarks about the meeting of the Palestinian Central Council, al-Ayyam quoted PLO Executive Committee member Nabil Sha‘ath stating: “The Council of European Ministers will discuss today a mechanism to activate and fund the ‘revolving fund’ in support of the PA.”

He was also reported by al-Quds as quoting President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements in response to US Secretary of State John Kerry: ‘I’ report to the council whose decisions apply to all. We are not backing down from the internationalization of the Palestinian cause, stressing that the US position has not offered us anything and that negotiations have caused many losses.”

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli naval boats opened gunfire on Palestinian fishing boats in the Sudaniyya, offshore Gaza.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) has voted for the boycotting of Israel.
