RAMALLAH, January 18, 2015 (WAFA) – Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on Sunday the opening of a preliminary examination by the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the situation in Palestine.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked United States State Secretary John Kerry to obstruct the ICC’s investigation, adding that the US State Department pledged to diplomatically hinder the move.
The dailies said the ICC’s move was largely welcomed among Palestinian factions, including Hamas, Fatah, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The move was also welcomed by the Lebanese Foreign Ministry, reported al-Ayyam.
Al-Quds said Archbishop of Sebastia, Theodosius (Hanna), denounced the publication of a satirical caricature of Prophet Mohammad by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Al-Ayyam and al-Quds quoted chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, who called upon the Foreign Minister of Canada to apologize to his nation for his pro-Israel stance.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Palestinian agricultural sector sustained an estimated loss of 60 million shekels ($15.2) due to the recent snowstorm that hit the East Mediterranean Countries.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi, sent an official letter to Japan, calling on it to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
