Newspapers Review: Syria Remains Main Front Page Story

RAMALLAH, August 29, 2013 (WAFA) – The expected attack on Syria continues to dominate the front page of the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

Each of the three dailies focused on a different subject even though all related to a possible attack on Syria.

Al-Quds said in the headline that the Syrian forces are moving around in case of a strike.

Al-Ayyam said the strikes will be carried out over several days, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel is recalling the reserves and Turkey is raising preparedness level.

The papers included several stories related to a possible attack on Syria, readiness for the attack in neighboring countries and its repercussions on the region.

Other topics highlighted in the dailies had to do with President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Jordan and Qatar and his meetings with officials in the two countries.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said in the headline that Abbas and the Jordanian monarch have called for a comprehensive solution that would end the suffering of the Syrian people.

Al-Quds quoted Abbas saying that Jordan is a full partner in the peace process and that he is consulting with it all the time.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a story from WAFA quoting French President Francois Hollande saying France intends to intensify efforts to facilitate Palestinian-Israeli talks.

It said in another story from Maan news agency that Israel is quickly restoring and refurbishing Qalandia airport north of Jerusalem in what appears to be an effort to use it once again after it was shut down since the outbreak of the second intifada in 2000.

Al-Quds reported on the Israeli military measures against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, including raids, shooting and searches. It also said Israeli police raided several Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem and made several arrests.

It said in a different story that the Muslim Endowment in Jerusalem is demanding Israel removes a metal stage built near Magharbe Gate for Jewish prayer.

It also reported on the US court decision to execute Nidal Hassan, the American soldier of Palestinian origin who killed 13 follow soldiers in Texas.
