Palestinian Consensus Government is Based on Human Rights, Stresses Hamdallah

RAMALLAH, June 25, 2014 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah stressed Wednesday that the Palestinian government national plan is built on human rights, transparency and democracy, according to the Government Media Center.

Hamdallah’s remarks came during a meeting with the head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Matthias Behnke, on Wednesday, at the Prime Minister office in Ramallah.

The Prime Minister briefed Behnke on the latest Israeli violations against Palestinian civilians and their properties, and the latest Palestinian efforts in establishing human rights norms.

Hamdallah said that Israel has arrested several Legislative Council members, bringing the number to 23 deputies in the occupation prisons. He condemned the Israeli government’s violations of the international human rights conventions by targeting unarmed Palestinian citizens, either by killing or detaining them, during its recent military campaign that included children.

The Prime Minister spoke of the need to abolish death penalty in the Gaza Strip, especially in light of the formation of the new consensus government, stressing the importance of establishing human rights’ rules in the Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, Hamdallah briefed the guest about the formation of technical committees in each governmental department headed by the competent minister, to study the situation of government departments in Gaza and make recommendations to the legal committee that was previously formed by the Cabinet, in order to unify the West Bank and Gaza’s institutions work to serve citizen’s interests and ensure the provision of better services.

On his side, Behnke stressed that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has recently issued a statement condemning the recent Israeli violations in the West Bank, adding that Israel should abide by the international law.

He stressed the continued cooperation with all Palestinian ministries to develop projects related to human rights in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, adding that he contacted international donors to provide support for such projects and stressing that Palestine is a leader when it comes to human rights.
