RAMALLAH, July 29, 2014 – (WAFA) – Palestinian leadership declared Tuesday afternoon that Palestinians are ready for a 24-hour humanitarian truce and are willing to favorably consider the United Nations’ proposal to extend the truce for 72 hours.
These remarks were made during a meeting headed by President Mahmoud Abbas at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah to follow-up on the current situation in Gaza. This meeting was held as part of the leadership’s efforts to address the ongoing Israeli military aggression on the besieged coastal enclave.
After extensive consultations and contacts with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the leadership decided to send a unified Palestinian delegation that includes representatives from all of the Palestinian parties to Cairo to discuss the next period. The delegation will assume its responsibilities under the umbrella of the PLO represented by Abbas.
The PLO Secretary-General Yasser Abed Rabbo read a press release stating: “Following extensive consultations and contacts with Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaderships, the Palestinian leadership declares that the Palestinians, including Hamas and Jihad, are ready for a 24-hour humanitarian truce. There is a proposal from the UN to extend the truce to 72 hours; a proposal that we favorably consider.”
He added: “We call all Arabic and international actors to support this positive stand and hold Israel fully responsible for the consequences of not accepting this truce as well.”
“The Palestinian leadership agreed with Hamas and Islamic Jihad to send a unified Palestinian delegation that includes representatives from all of the Palestinian parties to Cairo to discuss all what is related to the next period. This is more proof that we have a unified Palestinian stand. The delegation will head to Cairo under the PLO umbrella represented by President Mahmoud Abbas,” added Abed Rabbo.
He concluded: “We hold the Israeli government fully responsible for its war crimes that continued unabated against Gaza Palestinian population. We have already taken measures to prosecute Israel for its unprecedented atrocities.”
