PLO Criticizes Negative Remarks by Israeli Officials

RAMALLAH, June 17, 2013 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi strongly denounced on Monday recent negative statements by Israeli officials regarding the future of the peace process and the Palestinian people.

Ashrawi was commenting in a statement on remarks by Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon in which he rejected the Arab Peace Initiative and called it a spin and remarks by his deputy, Danny Danon, in which he claimed that there would never be a Palestinian state, whether US Secretary of State John Kerry visited or not, and that Palestinians will be governed by Jordan.

Kerry is expected back in the region in the near future to follow up on efforts to revive the stalled peace process. He has already made five visits to the region during which he met Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli officials.

“Such statements from Israeli officials, in addition to Israel’s actions on the ground, are the essence of the nature of this government and a clear negative response to Kerry’s initiatives,” said Ashrawi. “It is time for the international community, particularly the US, to cease its policy of ‘see no evil, hear no evil’ when it comes to Israel and to deal with reality when it comes to the deceptive mirage created by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s manipulative spin.”

Ashrawi said that “neither the state of Palestine nor its people are the property of Israel.  Israel has no right to turn Palestinians into settlers on their own land or hand them over to Jordan, as it has no right to violate Jordanian sovereignty and national identity.”

She said, “Given this overwhelming evidence of Israel’s verbal and actual rejection of the two-state solution and hence of peace, it is imperative that the US and the international community as a whole start dealing with reality rather than fiction.”
