PLO Official says Israel Aims to End Two-State Solution

RAMALLAH, November 21, 2013 (WAFA) – Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi Thursday warned that unless Israel ceases all settlement activities and adheres to the signed agreements, the two-state solution is going to come to an end.

She said in a statement issued after meeting several European diplomats in Ramallah that Israel was using the negotiations as a cover to its settlement activities.

Israel’s announcement last week of plans to build 20,000 housing units in West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements prompted the Palestinian negotiating team to resign and the talks to come to a halt.

“In order for negotiations to be successful, Israel must cease and desist all settlement activities and adhere to signed agreements and conventions, terms of reference and international and humanitarian law,” said Ashrawi.

She stressed that “Israel is using negotiations as a political and legal cover to escalate its settlement activities in and around Jerusalem and to evade accountability. Such unilateral actions constitute a deliberate attempt to destroy any chances of peace and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Ashrawi warned, “We are witnessing the end of the two-state solution, and if Israel is not held to account, chances of peace and stability in the region will be destroyed indefinitely.”
