Prisoners Ministry: Israel Practices Inhumane Violations against Palestinian Minor Detainees

Ramallah

RAMALLAH, August 28, 2014 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Ministry of Prisoners’ Affairs said, in a statement Thursday, the Israeli authorities practice dozens of outrageous violations against Palestinian detainees below the age of 18, in contradiction with all international conventions and treaties stipulating the protection of minors.

Psychological pressure and physical torture; prevention of sleep, violent shaking of the prisoner’s body, the handcuffing and shackling of the legs, the acute beating using various tools and methods, the denial of medical care, the naked inspection, the administering of a dirty smelly bag over the prisoner’s head, threatening to arrest the prisoner’s mother or sister, threatening to demolish his/her house, and the weeks-long solitary confinement are all part of the physical and psychological torture practiced by the Israeli authorities against minor prisoners, said the ministry.

Israel practices these ‘unethical, inhumane, and unacceptable’ violations against minors without any respect to the rights of children, to the international norms and conventions and to other agreements that guarantee the general protection of human rights, particularly children, the ministry added.

It called upon concerned child and human rights organizations to address the issue of Palestinian minor prisoners in Israeli jails, ensure their freedom, provide them with special care, and to file lawsuits against Israel to appeal the imprisonment sentences against Palestinian detainees; most of the confessions were obtained through inhumane psychological pressure and physical torture.
