RAMALLAH, September 3, 2014 – (WAFA) – Head of the Prisoners Affairs Issa Qaraqe stressed Wednesday that releasing Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel is the cornerstone for a just and peaceful settlement in the region.

Qaraqe‘made these remarks in response to the recent remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that no more Palestinian prisoners would be released as a goodwill gesture to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Qaraqe‘ added that Netanyahu will be obliged to release Palestinian prisoners, knowing that the resumption of negotiations or talks is contingent upon releasing Palestinian prisoners especially that the last round of negotiations collapsed after Israel reneged on its commitment to release the fourth batch of pre-Oslo prisoners.

He noted that the Palestinian leadership would also demand in future resumption of negotiations releasing all prisoners who were detained since last June, including parliamentarians and other prisoners who were re-arrested after being released during Gilad Shalit prisoner swap.
