JERUSALEM, February 16, 2013 (WAFA) – Quartet Representative Tony Blair Friday called on Israel to quickly resolve the issue of the four Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails on hunger strike for several months, according to a statement issued by his Jerusalem office.
Four prisoners have been on hunger strike, one of them Samer Issawi striking for over 200 days, demanding their release. Issawi, from East Jerusalem, was released in a prisoners exchange with Israel but re-arrested shortly after prompting his open-ended hunger strike until his release.
“I am concerned about the deteriorating health condition of the four prisoners, one of whom has been on a hunger strike for over 200 days,” said Blair.
“This issue needs to be resolved quickly in order to avoid a tragic outcome which has the potential to destabilize the situation on the ground,” he warned.
“Israel must respect the human rights of all prisoners and provide them with all necessary medical assistance and legal recourse to due process according to international standards,” said Blair.
