Several Suffocation Cases during Clashes at Joseph’s Tomb near Nablus

NABLUS, September 4, 2014 – (WAFA) – Several Palestinians suffocated early Thursday during clashes at Joseph’s Tomb near Balata refugee camp to the east of Nablus, said witnesses.

Witnesses said that tens of buses carrying settlers, under Israeli army protection, stormed the site and performed religious rituals there, triggering clashes with Palestinian locals.

Israeli forces fired concussion bombs and tear gas canisters at the Palestinians, causing several to suffer from excessive tear gas inhalation.

Protected by Israeli forces, Israeli settlers frequently storm Joseph’s Tomb, believing it to belong to the Biblical patriarch Joseph. Palestinians on the other hand believe the site to be the funerary monument to Sheikh Yousef Dweikat, a local religious figure.
