Syria refugee camps neutral in conflict, PLO official says

GAZA CITY, February 13, 2013 (Ma’an) – Palestinian refugee camps in Syria have always refused to shelter armed groups and are neutral in the internal conflict, said chairman of the PLO’s Refugee Affairs Department on Wednesday.

Head of the high-level PLO delegation Zakaria al-Agha made the comments during a meeting with the Syrian minister of information.

Together with a number of Syrian officials, the situation of the Palestinians’ caught up in the internal conflict in Syria was discussed. Measures were proposed in order to protect refugees – among these were increased security at the entrances and exits of camps.

Al-Agha said afterwards that the Syrian government supports the return of displaced Palestinians to camps in the country.

Al-Agha said that the PLO wishes to improve Palestinian-Syrian relations, and find a way to keep Palestinians out of the conflict. He hoped that the conflict in Syria would end soon.
