Abbas Pays Condolences to Family of Deceased Palestinian Prisoner

RAMALLAH, February 24, 2013 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday expressed his deepest condolences, through a phone call, to the family of Palestinian prisoner Arafat Jaradat, 30, who died on Saturday in Israeli jails.

Arafat Jaradat, a resident of Hebron and a father of two children under the age 3 and an expected third; his wife is four months pregnant, died on Saturday in Majdo Israeli prison six days after he was arrested.

Prime Minister Salam Fayyad expressed his deepest shock and sadness over the death of Jaradat and stressed the utmost need to reveal the reasons behind his death.

He stressed that Israel cannot be exempt from its responsibilities as Jaradat died while detained in Israeli jails, which forms a flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

He called on the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities to compel Israel to the rules of the international law.

He also called for an immediate solution to the prisoners’ file and the need to promptly release them.

Meanwhile, Hanan Ashrawi, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee also held Israel fully responsible for Jaradat’s death, and called on the United Nations, the international community, as well as the international human rights organizations to promptly intervene and demanded an international investigation into his death.

She also called to promptly release all prisoners from Israeli jails without any conditions. “The death of Jaradat is yet another proof to the dangerous situations in the Israeli jails.”
