RAMALLAH, March 4, 2015 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday said, during a meeting of the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization, that solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a prerequisite for regional stability and peace.
He said Israel’s prolonged occupation of the Palestinian Territory and the Golan Heights continues to provoke tensions in the region, and that as long as the status quo persists, there will be no peace in the region.
“Now is the time for Israel to wake up from its sleep … the ball is in its court,” he said, citing the Arab Peace Initiative as the best workable solution to the conflict.
Abbas said that whoever democratically wins the Israeli elections will be regarded as a peace partner with the Palestinian people. “We hope they treat us the same.”
Abbas hailed the recent recognition of an independent state of Palestine by the parliaments of many European countries, such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain and Luxemburg, ruling out Israel’s claims that such recognition hampers peace talks.
