Abbas: “We are Waiting for International Investigation into Prisoner’s Death”

RAMALLAH, February 26, 2013 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that the Palestinian forensic had proven that prisoner Arafat Jaradat died as a result of torture, but the Palestinian Authority didn’t adopt the theory until an international commission of inquiry approves it.

“We are facing an unprecedented Israeli escalation against our youth and children protesting the practices of the Israeli occupation and settlers, especially against the prisoners” said Abbas.

He referred to the issue of the prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli prisons saying that these prisoners are protesting their illegal detention and many of them were released [in 2011 prisoners exchange] “we do not know what are the serious security crimes they’ve committed for the Israelis to re-arrest them.”

He stressed that there was an agreement with the Israeli side on the releasing of prisoners detained before the Oslo agreement, as well as an agreement with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

“All of these things make the situation very difficult, but what worsens it is that the Israeli government is facing our young people, for the first time since a while, with live ammunition, and then they appeal to the PA to self-regulate and prevent demonstrations”, he added.

He said: “These [late] demonstrations come in response to attacks. If Israelis stop their attacks and the continuing of detention of prisoners, there will be no need for demonstrations.”

“If settlers stopped attacking our villages, burning property and corps, and killing people, no one from our side will attack them” he added.

Abbas said, “They have to stop all these actions in order to calm things down, we do not want things to reach this point where it is now, we want to reach a peaceful solution based on international legitimacy; we want to end the occupation of the land of Palestine state.”

“We do not want the misconceptions that they are trying to export to the world; that this land is disputed and we can reach an understanding, this is our land in all, the land of 1967 is our land, this is the international legitimacy and therefore this is our message to our people and to the world as well as the Israeli side; You have to stop these actions, we on our part have nothing left to offer because our hand will remain outstretched to peace” said Abbas.
