JERUSALEM – The Coalition for Jerusalem called on Tuesday the international community to end their complicity in Israel’s assault on Gaza.

In a press release, the coalition called the international community to “publicly and politically oppose Israel’s current assault on Gaza.”

Commenting on world leaders’ support for the Israeli aggression, the coalition stated: “World leaders continue to proclaim their support for Israel’s military offensive, despite the slaughter of over 500 Palestinians in Gaza during the past two weeks. On Friday, US President Barak Obama stated the country’s “strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel reaffirmed this message on the same day, merely adding that Israel must execute its mission in a “reasonable manner.”

Condemning the US and EU’s inaction to end ongoing Israeli atrocities and failure to recognize the Palestinian people as being subject to occupation, the coalition went on to say: “Neither the US nor the EU has taken strong political steps to pressure Israel into ending its gross atrocities against the people of Gaza. Rather, condemnation has been minimal and is repeatedly accompanied by strict denunciation of Hamas’ rocket fire. This tendency to equate the two sides in either their capacities or legitimacies is both dangerous and inaccurate.”

It added: “In doing so, the international community fails to recognize Palestinians as an occupied people as well as their right to resistance. This right is protected under international law, including in UN General Assembly resolution of November 1974, which “reaffirms the legitimacy of the peoples’ struggle for liberation from colonial and foreign domination and alien subjugation by all available means, including armed struggle.”

The coalition highlighted the international community’s disregard to demanding lifting Gaza siege. It stated: “The continued disregard of the right to resist, as well as the demand for immediate ceasefire without clear conditionality of the end of Israel’s blockade on Gaza, directly interferes with Palestinian self-determination. Moreover, by giving Israel the green light to carry out both its air and ground operations in Gaza, the international community bears responsibility for the more than 580 Palestinian deaths, including the lives of over 100 children. The coalition noted worldwide powers’ complicity in Israeli crimes, stating: “So long as third states continue to fail to use their powers to pressure Israel, they remain complicit in the severe human rights abuses being committed in Gaza. We also recognize that this complicity extends beyond the time-bound frame of the current assault and dates back to Israel’s 1948 seizure of Palestinian land.”

The coalition concluded by appealing “to foreign governments to exhaust all possible means to compel Israel to immediately cease its military assault and end its seize on the Gaza Strip, as well as the broader occupation of Palestine.”

The Coalition for Jerusalem is a league of religious dignitaries, political factions, civil society organizations, and individuals based in Occupied Jerusalem. It is a non violent, direct action group formed in 2004 to oppose Israeli Government arbitrary measures to alter the Status of Jerusalem in violation of International Legitimacy and Human Rights Conventions, and to reaffirm that East Jerusalem is the Capital of the future Palestinian State.
