Foreign Minister: Lack of Accountability for Israel’s Crimes Undermines Credibility of United Nations and International Community

GENEVA, July 23, 2014 (WAFA) – Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, on Wednesday, stressed that continued impunity of Israel and lack of accountability to its crimes encourages Israel to repeat its violations, which if continued, would undermine the credibility of the United nations and international community.

‘The continued impunity of Israel, the occupying power, and the lack of accountability for its crimes, has created a state of absence, a crisis of injustice in Palestine, and promoted the culture of impunity, which led to encouraging Israel to repeat such violations, which if continued, would undermine the credibility of the United Nations, the international community and the human rights system as a whole before the nations that still believe in international law and it institutions.’

In a speech at the Special Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Maliki added, regarding the human rights situation in occupied Palestinian Territory, that it is time to put an end to the Israeli occupation and violations against our land, our national aspirations, and our natural right of freedom and to live in peace and security like other nations of the world.

Maliki stressed the existence of a humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, ‘we still do not know how many martyrs does Israel need for it to stop its aggression, and how many demolished homes and destruction does it need to stop this tyranny’.

Maliki demanded a strong and immediate international action in all of the United Nation organizations, to pressure and to stop the Israeli military attacks in line with the duties of the Council, the United Nations resolutions, the international humanitarian law, international law, and human rights. He called on the Members of States to support the draft resolution submitted by Palestine, which calls for the protection of the Palestinian people.

He called on the international community, to work on lifting the blockade, which is an illegal and immoral siege imposed by Israel for eight years, collectively punishing over 1.8 million and eight hundred thousand people.

He also called on the international community to provide the whole strip with humanitarian assistance through providing medicine and food, and restoring electricity and water while working on collecting international commitment to the process of reconstructing the strip with international guarantees by Israel not to re-attack the sector in the future.

He also appealed to the international community to work actively to end the occupation ‘which is the source of all violations’, to empower our nation to determine its fate, and the embodiment of an independent State of Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of refugees to their homes based on UN Resolution 194.
