Israel Announces Tenders to Construct 1,500 Settlement Units, Presidency Strongly Condemns

JERUSALEM, June 5, 2014 – (WAFA) – Israeli Ministry of Housing announced Wednesday night tenders to construct 1,500 new settlement housing units in several  illegal West Bank settlements, including 400 settlement units in ‘Ramat Shlomo’ settlement in East Jerusalem.

Israeli Minister of Housing Uri Ariel was reported  as saying: “ I congratulate the decision to give a proper Zionist response to the establishment of the Palestinian terror cabinet.”

Israeli news websites reported  that tenders were released for 223 new housing units in Efrat, 484 others in Beitar Ilit, both settlements located near Bethlehem, 38 units in Geva Binyamin (Adam), located near Jerusalem and Al-Ram, 76 in Ariel, located near Salfit in northern West Bank, 78 in Alfei Menashe, located near Qalqilya, 155 in Givat Ze’ev, located near Jerusalem, 55 of which in Agan Ha’ayalot, and 400 new units in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

Presidential Advisor Nimr Hammad was reported by AFP as saying: “It is time for the American administration to take serious steps against what the government of Israel is doing. We strongly condemn this decision which affirms that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a liar and is not interested in the two-state solution.”

Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh vehemently condemned the settlement construction announcement, stating: “New settlement tenders are announced at a time when the world has voiced support for the Palestinian national consensus government.”

He warned that the Palestinian leadership would take unprecedented steps in response to the settlement construction plans.

US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro strongly condemned the construction announcement and was reported  as saying: “We oppose settlement construction in the West Bank as well as announcements regarding such construction. We would do so with or without this disputed case of a new Palestinian transitional government.”

Shapiro reiterated that the US would deal with the new Palestinian government, rejecting the Israeli government’s calls to boycott it.
