Israel’s Destruction Did Not Spare Places of Worship in Gaza

GAZA, August 26, 2014 – (WAFA) – The Israeli destruction machine in the ongoing aggression on Gaza has targeted every single place in Gaza; even places of worship were not spared, carrying out a systematic policy against everything that is Palestinian.

Since Israel launched its onslaught on Gaza on July 7th, Israeli warplanes have been, on a daily basis, targeting Gaza mosques, some of which date back to the time before the Israeli occupation started, dropping tons of explosives on them and reducing them to rubble.

The latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Waqf and Religious Affairs show that during the 50 days of aggression, 261 mosques have been totally or partially damaged, while two churches as well as 12 cemeteries have been damaged.

Many Imams in Gaza confirmed to WAFA that Israeli F-16 fighter jets tend to carry pre-dawn strikes on mosques; warning rockets are fired by drone planes, then hardly minutes later Israeli warplanes proceed to bombard the mosques.

The Imam al-Shafi‘i mosque, the largest and oldest in Gaza, has been targeted by over nine rockets during the aggression, completely reducing it to rubble. Ali bin Abi Taleb, Hasan al-Banna, and al-Sham‘a mosques have also been bombarded.

Abu Salah Yassin, 70, a resident in al-Zaytoun neighborhood to the east of Gaza, said: “Israel attacks houses of worship, breaking all taboos and violating all divine laws and objective laws. There isn’t any law that permits the bombing of mosques; even the law of the jungle prohibits the targeting of places of worship.”

“Had Israel been deterred by the international community from launching its onslaught, it would have not dared to demolish houses of worship,” added Yassin.
