Italy Follows EU Policy in the Middle East, says Foreign Minister

ROME, December 9, 2013 (WAFA) – Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino Tuesday said the Italian government’s position regarding the Palestinian-Israeli peace process is the same as that of the European Union.

Answering a question by WAFA on Italy’s position from Israeli settlements, Bonino said in a meeting with members of the foreign press in Rome that the Italian government adopts and supports the EU position announced by its foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton regarding the Israeli settlement activities in the Palestinian Territory.

She said Italy and the EU rejected an Israeli request to postpone implementation of EU guidelines on Israeli settlements and their products.

Regarding recent agreements the EU has signed with Israel, Bonino said that there was nothing new in these agreements, which are a continuation of past agreements concerning scientific and technological cooperation.

She said that Italian friendship with Israeli does not affect Italy’s decisions and that Italy is working towards having a unified European position regarding the peace process.

She warned of the consequences of the failure of US peace efforts, which she said would only drag the area to a point of unpredictable consequences.
