RAMALLAH, July 2, 2014 – (WAFA) – Palestinian leadership Wednesday called on the Israeli government to take immediate actions to stop settlers’ racist and criminal acts across West Bank.
Mohammad Hussein Abu Khdeir, 17, a Palestinian teenager from the Arab East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shuafat, was kidnapped by settlers on Wednesday and was later cold-bloodedly killed. Abu Khdeir’s body, which was charred and bore signs of violence, was found in a West Jerusalem forest.
“We condemn this criminal act and call for providing international protection for the Palestinian people against settlers’ attacks that, under the protection of Israeli occupation forces, have continued unabated,” said the Palestinian leadership in a statement.
President Abbas presided Tuesday evening over a meeting at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah to discuss the latest killings of Palestinians and raids into West Bank cities by the Israeli occupation forces.
Abbas was reported as saying: “The Israeli government’s policy of collective punishment against the Palestinian people should be ceased, including military operations in West Bank, air raids on Gaza, house demolitions and cold-blooded murder of Palestinians.”
Abbas stressed that the Palestinian position, agreed upon by all factions in the Cairo agreement, to adopt peaceful popular resistance as a means for the Palestinian people to attain legitimate rights in establishing the independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Palestinian leadership called the Israeli government not to exploit the ‘murder’ of the three settlers to step up the policy of escalation, settlement construction and arbitrary practices across Palestinian Territories, especially in occupied East Jerusalem, stressing that such policy will only exacerbate tensions, violence, blood-shedding, and instability in the region.
The leadership affirmed its commitment to ensure the success of efforts exerted to achieve national unity and confront all suspicious attempts meant to undermine it.
It also affirmed its full support to the national consensus government’s steps aimed at the unification of West Bank and Gaza and complete termination of the division, calling upon all sectors of Palestinian society to support the government in clearing the remnants of division despite all obstacles.
