Newspaper Review: Passover Sacrifice Attempts, Freeing Youngest Palestinian Detainee

RAMALLAH, April 25, 2016 (WAFA) – Right-wing Jewish Israelis’ attempts to carry out ritual Passover sacrifices inside Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and freeing the youngest Palestinian detainee from Israeli detention centers hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies highlighted tensions over Jewish settlers’ intrusions into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on the occasion of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Palestinian guards of the mosque compound foiled a Jewish settlers’ attempt to carry out rituals, namely bringing goats inside the mosque compound as a Passover sacrifice.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that thousands of Israeli police officers were deployed in Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam reported the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron’s Old City would be closed to Muslims on Monday and Tuesday for the Passover holiday.

The theme of freeing the youngest Palestinian detainee from Israeli detention centers also hit the front page headlines in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida.

They reported that Israel freed 12-year-old Palestinian Dima al-Wawi after detaining her for over two months for an alleged stabbing attempt.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Orthodox churches celebrated Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah districts.

Both dailies reported that Israeli forces detained Imad al-Barghouthi, a Palestinian astronomer, at a checkpoint at the entrance of al-Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah.

Highlighting Palestinian cabinet’s decision to freeze some trade s’ bank accounts, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Labor Ministry as explaining that this attempt is designed to compel the trade s to regularize their status.
