Palestine and Jordan Sign Cooperation Protocol in Local Government

RAMALLAH, April 28, 2014 (WAFA) – Minister of Local Government, Sa’id al-Kuni, signed on Monday a protocol for mutual cooperation in local government and municipal affairs with the Jordanian Minister of Municipal Affairs, Waleed al-Masri, in Ramallah.

Under the signed protocol, both ministries will regularly share all publications pertaining to local government and municipal affairs and their mechanisms, in addition to encouraging the exchange of visits and holding training courses in these fields.

Organization of workshops for knowledge and experience sharing in the local government field, enhancement of social accountability, preparation of strategic plans as well as the integration potentials were all addressed in the protocol.

During the signing ceremony, al-Kuni said the Palestinian government places great emphasis for promoting joint action, for improving the legislative system governing municipalities and village councils, and for sharing knowledge in this sector. He added that the agreement encourages the establishment of twinning relations between Palestinian municipal councils and their Jordanian counterparts, which would then accumulate their expertise and the cognitive abilities of their personnel.

On the side of Jordan, al-Masri noted to the importance for establishing information networks between both ministries by utilizing modern technology in scientific research and data collection, allowing access to both countries’ local councils to these aspects.

The parties agreed to form a joint committee of the specialized teams in both ministries with the purpose to follow up with the implementation of the protocol articles and achieving its objectives.
