Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe Confirms Support for Palestinians Right to Self-Determination and Freedom

RAMALLAH, November 30, 2014 (WAFA) – The Sub-Committee on the Middle East of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) confirmed its support for Palestinians right to self-determination, freedom and justice.

During a meeting between PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi and representatives of PACE, the latter stressed the need to set a clear-cut timeframe to end the occupation of Palestine before the chances for a two-state solution are destroyed.

The Sub-Committee also condemned Israeli measures of preventing its members from visiting the besieged Gaza Strip to assess the magnitude of devastation from Israel’s most recent horrific war in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Ashrawi briefed the visiting delegation on current and future Palestinian political initiatives, including Palestinian efforts in seeking a UN Security Council resolution to set a specific timeframe to end the military occupation and establish the independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

She also expressed her appreciation to those states that have already recognized the State of Palestine and to those parliaments and their people who have voted in favor of recognition, and she called on all states to follow suit.

Ashrawi briefed the delegation on the latest political developments in Palestine, Israel’s violent and illegal measures against the Palestinian people, the expansion of its illegal settlement enterprise in and around Jerusalem, Israeli settler violence, Israel’s draconian legislation targeting the Palestinian people, and its ongoing blockade in Gaza, as well as briefed them on short-term and long-term reconstruction and development in Gaza.
