NEW YORK, September 28, 2013 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah Friday urged donor countries to continue financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), describing this support as essential, according to a statement by the prime minister’s Government Media Center.
Speaking at the special meeting of the group of supporters of UNRWA held in New York, Hamdallah stressed that “until a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian refugees is achieved, … the political, financial and moral support of UNRWA remains essential.”
The prime minister said resolving the issue of the Palestine refugees according to UN Resolution 194 is a top priority for the Palestinian leadership and one of the basic issues for a final settlement of the conflict with Israel and peace in the region.
Hamdallah praised the role of the United Nations, especially UNRWA, for its “consistent commitment to provide assistance, relief and protection for Palestinian refugees.”
He also urged the international community to assist and protect the Palestine refugees in war-torn countries, particularly in Syria.
Hamdallah had earlier met with representatives of donor countries, who confirmed their continued support for the Palestinian government to enable it to carry out its duties, said the press statement.
The donors also condemned ongoing Israeli construction in West Bank and Jerusalem settlements and deprivation of Palestinians of their rights in the Area C of the West Bank, which is still under full Israeli control, according to the Media Center statement.
