Presidency Warns against Israel’s Ongoing collective Punishment against Palestinians

RAMALLAH, June 19, 2014 – (WAFA) – Palestinian Presidency warned Thursday against Israel’s ongoing measures of collective punishment against the Palestinian territory, especially Hebron.

“Netanyahu’s government has taken the three settlers’ disappearance as a pretext to impose the most severe punitive reprisals against the Palestinian people and besiege them in various cities, towns and villages, which contradict with international humanitarian law,” said the release.

The arrest campaigns against hundreds of Palestinians, including freed prisoners, constitute a flagrant violation of a previous deal ]made with Israel[ to free them” stated the Presidency in a press release.

The press release added: “Therefore, we condemn assaulting hunger-striking prisoners, passing the force-feeding bill, raiding Birzeit University and the ongoing policy of settlement and Judiazation of Jerusalem as well as the ongoing blockade imposed on Gaza Strip, which are all rejected and only contribute to creating a negative atmosphere”

Presidency noted that the international community should not simply condemn these practices, but must take concrete actions and exert pressure on the Israeli government to halt such unethical and illegitimate policy.

The Presidency stressed that although it condemns violence, irrespective of perpetrators, and commit itself to the peace process as well as to achieving just and comprehensive solution, one that would be conducive to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, it opposes that this commitment be utilized to provide a cover for the Israeli policy of oppression against the Palestinian people or be construed as succumbing to fait accompli policy”
